Henry Timken, a carriage maker in St. Louis, Missouri, noticed that heavy freight wagons had a difficult time making sharp turns in the 1890s. To solve the problem, he created a tapered roller bearing design that could handle both radial (weight) and thrust (cornering force) loads of the vehicle. The results were encouraging and provided several customer benefits.
In some cases, the bearings improved wagon performance so much that fewer mules were required to pull them. Better cornering also meant less chance of losing a load of goods. Henry realized that the tapered roller bearing could improve product performance in many other applications as well, and he and his sons founded The Timken Roller Bearing and Axle Company in 1899, building the foundation for a global enterprise that today helps keep the world in motion.
TIMKEN TAPERED ROLLER WHEEL BEARINGS
Your wheel bearings may not cross your mind on a daily basis, but these essential wheel end parts help ensure that your wheels are able to turn freely and handle everything you’re hauling. Timken tapered roller bearings are precisely designed to manage both radial and axial loads, even in the most unforgiving conditions.
Tapered roller bearings are the most common type of wheel bearing, and for good reason. The precision-designed bearing cone and cup, or inner race assembly and outer race, are typically mounted in opposing pairs on a shaft. Wheel bearings are typically engineered to last 100,000 miles or more - a lot of heavy hauling per mile - and you start to hear the tell-tale sounds from the wheel that something’s off, replacing wheel bearings is a high priority fix.
Timken tapered roller bearing design features:
Single cone and cup.
One-piece pressed steel cage that holds rollers on the cone and spaces them evenly.
Availability in trailer, front-wheel, or differential configurations
TIMKEN BEARING SETS
Our full haul of heavy-duty everything includes single tapered bearing cups and tapered bearing cones, but if it’s a full bearing replacement you’re after, we make it easy by offering Timken bearing sets that include both.
Engineered especially for commercial vehicles, we also offer Timken’s MileMate® matched cup and cone bearing sets to help increase your uptime. Precisely matched sets enable easier installation, and the bearings will distribute loads more evenly to extend overall bearing service life.
Timken MileMate® sets feature:
Engineered steel
Precision profiles
Tighter tolerances
Enhanced surface finishes
Flexibility
Compatibility
Easy installation
Meet or exceed OEM specs for several manufacturers.
TIMKEN HANGER BEARINGS
In addition to being an industry leader in wheel bearing technology, Timken also delivers reliability and durability with driveline center support bearings, or hanger bearings. Easy to install, Timken driveline center support bearings interchange with all major truck applications to help maximize your fleet’s uptime and keep your journey smooth.
Timken driveline center support bearings are:
Reliable, featuring an additional grease barrier between the bearing retainer caps and sealed bearing to help extend bearing life.
Durable and built from reinforced, heavy-gauge, cold-rolled steel to withstand tough environments.
